Healthy Together: Medicare 101 Workshop

Medicare coverage is personal — and changes to those plans and benefits may feel unnerving as it affects a person’s overall health and well-being.

The Inflation Reduction Act was passed in 2022 and brought about many changes to Medicare that are now being implemented for 2025. These changes affect all standalone Medicare prescription drug plans and Medicare Advantage plans with prescription drug coverage.

Join us for a discussion about the major Medicare Part D Prescription Drug changes that are coming starting on January 1, 2025 at the Ypsilanti District Library in the Community Room (5577 Whittaker Rd., Ypsilanti, MI 48197. (Refreshments will be provided.)

Mental Health & Wellbeing Month

to May 31

Mental Health & Wellbeing Month

In a world that is constantly evolving, it can be overwhelming to navigate the various challenges and changes happening around us. The pressures of work, relationships, and societal factors, like politics, climate change, and the economy, can significantly impact our mental well-being, sometimes even more than we realize.

While society is getting more comfortable discussing mental health, it can still be hard to know “Where to Start” when these pressures are impacting your daily life — what do you do when you think you might be experiencing signs and symptoms of a mental health condition?

What is mental health?

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices.1 Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

Why is mental health important for overall health?

Mental and physical health are equally important components of overall health.  For example, depression increases the risk for many types of physical health problems, particularly long-lasting conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Similarly, the presence of chronic conditions can increase the risk for mental illness.

Where to start? Start Here Resource

Technology Training Program

The COVID-19 pandemic showed us how important technology is, but older adults who don’t know how to use it became isolated.

That’s why senior residents in the West Willow neighborhood attending the New West Willow Neighborhood Association sponsored training class are receiving free tablets and the training to use them.

Residents registering for the 6-week technology training class learn to send emails, make Zoom calls and access resources on the internet. About 10 seniors have already participated in the grant-funded course.

Take Back Meds

The Prescription Drug Take Back Day (2057 Tyler Rd., Ypsilanti 48198) aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications.

Proper drug disposal is important because it helps protect human health and our environment. Unwanted drugs should not be flushed down the drain.  Medications should be kept secure when in the home to prevent unlawful use and regularly disposed using the steps shared in this video and save a life card.

When drugs are no longer needed, they should be taken to a collection for incineration to destroy the chemicals within them and prevent them from entering the water resources we use for drinking water. If this is not available, follow the instructions provided to dispose of them in the trash.

Chemotherapy drugs are typically not accepted at independently hosted take back locations.  To find safe disposal options for of chemotherapy drugs, contact to your prescribing doctor or dispensing pharmacist.

NWWNA's Pull Over Prevention Event

In Ypsilanti, several organization are coming together to create a safe space for people to come and receive car repairs, with a mission of reducing unnecessary traffic stops.

Pull Over Prevention (POP) is an effort to empower motorists – especially people of color and immigrants in our community – to avoid unsafe discriminatory interactions with law enforcement.

Police and immigration officers use minor automotive issues as reasons to stop, search, fine, and deport people. POP volunteers provide repair and advice for these issues, share repair skills, and promote access to local resources.
