Aging in Your Home & Community

“Aging in community" means living where you want and keeping a good quality of life as you grow older. Ideally, aging in place should not only maintain your usual quality of life but also improve it whenever possible. To improve seniors' quality of life, a community needs to focus on housing, social connections, finances, transportation, and access to nutritious food and healthcare. The layout of a neighborhood greatly affects a senior’s ability to live safely and independently. We provide a complete plan to help everyone, especially seniors, thrive.

Be More Physically Active

Being active improves your health and wellbeing. It helps with balance and lowers the risk of falls. Exercise also helps manage chronic conditions like diabetes, arthritis, and mental health. New workshops will be held in Fall/Winter 2025/26 at New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church (Multipurpose Building, 2345 Tyler Rd., Ypsilanti, MI 48198).

Caring for a Loved One

We help caregivers find resources to care for their loved ones and themselves. We work with local groups to support family caregivers of older adults through care advice, education, skills training, and counseling. Coming Winter 2026: training to help caregivers care for themselves while caring for an aging or disabled family member.

Community Garden

Community gardens help seniors in West Willow by giving them fresh, healthy food for better nutrition. Our garden brings back fond memories and has raised beds so seniors with different mobility needs can join. Visit Linda’s Garden at 517 Onondaga St. in the Spring and Summer. Youth and seniors work together to fight food insecurity by providing fresh produce, lowering food costs, and building a stronger community.

Friendly Visits & Wellness Checks

Health & Wellness Ambassadors make friendly visits that help people feel less lonely, improve their health, and build stronger community bonds. These ambassadors are usually your neighbors who have been trained people to offer easy, understanding support without medical treatment. Visits last 20-30 minutes and can happen in person, by phone, or video call.

Home Care

Making home changes and repairs for seniors improves safety, ease of movement, and quality of life. Accessible homes help older adults move freely and stay independent. Adjusting homes to fit their needs helps with daily tasks and lowers the chance of falls. These changes make homes more comfortable and secure, letting seniors live independently and stay connected to their community. The "Housing Outreach One Stop Shop" program offers resources to property owners and renters for healthy, affordable, and safe homes. This program aims to improve neighborhoods and will start as a pilot in 2025/26.

Make Your Health a Priority

Our Care Team will help you set health goals and address any challenges you face. They’ll connect you with a Community Health Worker who will create a plan and share resources for food, utilities, benefits, mental health, and more. Call (734) 985-0589 to schedule an appointment.

Technology Training

The technology workshop for seniors helps older adults learn to use digital devices and the internet. It offers easy, step-by-step lessons on smartphones, tablets, email, online safety, and video calls to keep participants connected. The goal is to make digital skills simple, improve daily life, encourage social interaction, and support independence. Limited tablets are available for use during the workshop. Upcoming sessions will take place in April 2026 at New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church, 2345 Tyler Rd., Ypsilanti, MI 48198.

Neighborhoods Matter

Neighborhoods shape our lives. Where we live can influence our health, our economic potential and residents’ futures.

Neighborhoods provide opportunities for social connections, physical activity and intellectual stimulation which may help to preserve older adults’ physical and cognitive health.

Communities are important spaces that impact the opportunities for people to “live long and live well.”

Great service …

“From the company the Neighborhood Association worked with to shovel snow on my sidewalk and driveway. The guy arrived early in the morning and did an excellent job.

I was relieved because I had to go get my vaccination shot. That morning we had over 6 inches of snow. My neighbor got me on the list to get my snow shoveled. She was looking out for me.” — Louise
