Aging in Your Home & Community

"Aging in community" means living where you choose and staying well as you get older. Ideally, it should keep or improve your quality of life. To do this, communities must support housing, social life, money, transportation, healthy food, and healthcare. The design of a neighborhood affects how safely and independently seniors can live. We offer a full plan to help all, especially seniors, live well.

Be More Physically Active

Being active boosts your health and wellbeing. It improves balance and reduces the chance of falls. Exercise also helps control chronic illnesses like diabetes, arthritis, and mental health issues. New workshops will take place in Fall/Winter 2025/26 at New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church (Multipurpose Building, 2345 Tyler Rd., Ypsilanti, MI 48198).

Caring for a Loved One

We help caregivers get resources to care for their loved ones and themselves. We team up with local groups to support family caregivers of older adults with advice, education, training, and counseling. Coming Winter 2026: training to help caregivers take care of themselves while caring for an aging or disabled family member.

Community Garden

Community gardens help seniors in West Willow get fresh, healthy food for better nutrition. Our garden has raised beds, making it easier for seniors with mobility issues to participate. Visit Linda’s Garden at 517 Onondaga St. in spring and summer. Young and old work together to reduce food insecurity by growing fresh produce, cutting food costs, and building a stronger community.

Friendly Visits & Wellness Checks

Health & Wellness Ambassadors are friendly neighbors who visit to reduce loneliness, boost health, and connect the community. They’re trained to offer simple, clear support, not medical care. Visits last 20-30 minutes and can be in person, by phone, or video.

Home Care

Changing and fixing homes for seniors makes them safer and easier to move around in, improving their quality of life. Accessible homes help older adults stay independent and do daily tasks more easily, reducing falls. These updates create comfortable, safe homes where seniors can live on their own and stay part of the community. The "Housing Outreach One Stop Shop" program provides resources for owners and renters to have healthy, affordable, and safe homes. It will launch as a pilot in 2025/26 to help improve neighborhoods.

Make Your Health a Priority

Our Care Team will help you set health goals and overcome challenges. They will connect you with a Community Health Worker who will make a plan and provide resources for food, bills, benefits, mental health, and more. Call (734) 985-0589 to book an appointment.

Technology Training

The technology workshop for seniors teaches older adults how to use digital devices and the internet. It provides simple, clear lessons on smartphones, tablets, email, online safety, and video calls to help them stay connected. The goal is to make digital skills easy, improve daily life, encourage socializing, and support independence. A few tablets are available to use during the workshop. The next sessions will be in April 2026 at New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church, 2345 Tyler Rd., Ypsilanti, MI 48198.

Neighborhoods Matter

Neighborhoods shape our lives. Where we live can influence our health, our economic potential and residents’ futures.

Neighborhoods provide opportunities for social connections, physical activity and intellectual stimulation which may help to preserve older adults’ physical and cognitive health.

Communities are important spaces that impact the opportunities for people to “live long and live well.”

Great service …

“From the company the Neighborhood Association worked with to shovel snow on my sidewalk and driveway. The guy arrived early in the morning and did an excellent job.

I was relieved because I had to go get my vaccination shot. That morning we had over 6 inches of snow. My neighbor got me on the list to get my snow shoveled. She was looking out for me.” — Louise
